Air India Crash in Ahmedabad: Pilots Sent “Mayday” Call Before Losing Contact

Ahmedabad, June 12, 2025 —

A tragic aviation incident unfolded this morning when an Air India domestic flight crash-landed on the outskirts of Ahmedabad after issuing a distress “Mayday” call, officials confirmed.

Flight AI-273, en route from Delhi to Ahmedabad,

Lost contact with air traffic control shortly after the pilots declared an emergency. Eyewitnesses near the crash site reported seeing smoke trailing from the aircraft before it descended rapidly into a field approximately 10 kilometers from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.

Emergency response teams rushed to the scene immediately.

Initial reports indicate that the aircraft attempted an emergency landing but suffered significant structural damage on impact. The number of casualties has not yet been confirmed, but authorities stated that rescue operations are ongoing, and all efforts are being made to save survivors.

According to sources in the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the pilots’ last communication was a Mayday call citing a critical engine failure. Moments later, all radio contact was lost.

Local hospitals have been placed on high alert, and families of passengers are being contacted. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on social media, writing: “Deeply saddened by the tragic news from Ahmedabad. Prayers are with the families of those affected. Rescue operations are underway at full scale.”

Air India has released a brief statement confirming the incident and pledged full cooperation with investigative authorities. “Our thoughts are with all those onboard and their loved ones. We are coordinating with rescue officials and will provide updates as information becomes available.”

Investigators from the DGCA and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) are en route to the site to begin examining the cause of the crash. Weather conditions were reported to be clear at the time of the incident, which could help narrow the investigation to mechanical or technical failure.

This marks the most serious air accident involving an Indian carrier in over five years.

This is a developing story. More updates to follow.
